COPA is a cost object but profit center as the name suggests is not a cost object. If you want to know why profit center is not a cost object then you should read the difference between a cost center and a profit center. Please remember one this when COPA is active in a system COPA always gets the real account assignment. This is true in most of the case.

Profit Centers are not part of CO, they are part of Enterprice Controlling and therefor cannot be a cost object.

A profitability Segement is a cost object. It is a unique set of characteristics, which SAP in the background assigns a cost object number to.

E.g. Cocd 1010, customer 0001, product ABC, division a1 is a profit segment. Say the number is 0001. When any of the characteristics change, say CoCd 1010, customer 0002, product ABC, division a1, then SAP would automatically derive a new Profitability Segment number in the background, and the posting would use that as the cost object.
