my client wants the field special gl indicator to be mandatory in transaction F-53.
Is there any way to accomplish this?

You can do this with a transaction variant using t code SHD0.

Sorry not to have mentioned this earlier but can i use this variant only for a particular posting key?

The other way out is that default a different doc type for t-code F-53 from SPRO and then for that Doc type you can write a validation rule that the special GL indicator is mandatory for whatever posting key that you want.
