Maintaning the Inventory stock is depending on the Movements your doing at inventory. and there are lots of movement types that SAP suggest to use. please go to the SPRO => MM => Inventory management and phy, inv. => movement types => and see the notes besides the TAB copy change movement types..
Well, If you just interested in maintaining stock you can do it in many ways using movement types of unplanned goods receipts , 561 for intial entry of stock balances, 501 for GR without PO, GR without production order 521 using transaction MIGO
