Getting error message Number "000-278-WLG_HOS" not defined for material type MATERIAL

Dear Community,

I am getting an error message "Number "000-278-WLG_HOS" not defined for material type MATERIAL" while creating a material master via MM01. I observe when I replace "0" before "-" via 1 or any number it allows to create.

What is the message number that you get, the text is the same for 4 different messages, double click the message to get to its long text, there you can find the message number

Diagnosis

Every material type has a speific number range for external number assignment. The material number you have entered does not lie within the number range for this material type.

Procedure

Choose a material number that lies within the number range of your material type.

is not allowed as number range, press F1 in the from number field, it is explained there what is allowed and what not.

If that is the reason, it shouldn't allow creating mat starting with 001-* too

I share your opinion. You should report it to SAP. However, if SAP closes this gap then your are still not any further. You have to create 2 number ranges like shown in F1 field help and in OSS note 2486949 which was already suggested by Lakshmipathi
