Changing standard SAP delivered Characteristics

Hi All,

PPPI_MATERIAL_SHORT_TEXT is a standard SAP delivered characteristic with a limitation of 30 char. I want to change this to 42, for requirement on my Shop Floor system.

Is it possible to change the number of characteristics of the Standard SAP delivered characteristic?? if yes, how ??
