old material number

dear Gurus,

What is the use of old material number!!!

one more clarification that ....

my client earlier maintained for materials with their own code say "12345" and after entered in to SAP "MAT 12345". this should be now as material code.

But they want to be bit confusion to which material with material category, which they are maintained

so they want to be put old mateiaal code and new material code.

my question is whaat is the use of that field and how to see it .

Before using sap system, we may be having diff. mat. codes.

For tracking this change we are using this field. We may have report..

how we have to track it, we have to ask the abaper to prepare z report

suppose the end user needs to do the po at that time he will give old no, automatically new number of SAP generates and creates PO
