Mass transport: how to select more than 7 roles at a time

Former Member

I have about 50 roles I need to transport. I would like to use mass transport, but when I select all 50 roles, only the first 7 are actually added to the transport list.

I have to repeat the selection many times before all the roles are included in my transport request.. still a rather time consuming process. How can I select more than 7 at a time?

Hi Dan,

Copy all the roles that you need to transport.

Then go to SAP system

1. PFCG -> Utilities -> Mass transport.

2. Then click the "Multiple Selection" and then click the click "Upload from Clipboard" (Shift+F12).

This will bring in all the copies roles. Then you can proceed with the transport.

If the method Zaheer advised gives you limitation issues in the future, (somewhere around 500 records the clipboard tends to fail, the real limit isn't clear to me) you can also create you role list as a text file. In the multiple selection screen there is also a button to upload from file, next to the 'copy from clipboard' button.

By the way, this is a standard feature in quite a lot of report selection screens. I often use it in SE16 as well.

Excellent, thanks! Where do you recommend I copy the desired roles from? I know I can run a report in SUIM.. but is there a quicker way to do this without leaving role maintenance?

What do you mean by 'leaving'? Just open a second screen...

Right, I could open another screen without technically "leaving" role maint.. what I should have asked is if there is a quick way to copy the role names that doesn't involve another transaction. I'm perfectly fine with an answer of "no".. just want to make sure I'm not overlooking a shortcut.

It think that all depends on your selection skills and the naming convention of your roles......

If selecting within a name range like Z-XX001 - Z-XX050 allows you to pick exactly the ones to transport there's no need to bring in the list from somewhere else.

Regardless of this specific problem, I would like to agree with Jurjen and the point that a well thought out naming convention for roles makes a lot of sense from the start!

And now we're back to my original problem.

We have a structured role naming convention that would make it very easy to select with wildcards.. however, when I try to do it that way, the system won't let me select more than 8 roles at a time.

See if you can reproduce this problem in your environment:

1. Start PFCG

2. Utilities -> Mass Transport

3. Click multiple selection button

4. Enter a mask that would match more than 8 roles, press F4

5. Click select all (make sure more than 8 roles are selected)

6. Click copy button

7. Observe that only the first 8 role are actually copied to the multiple selection list

It might only be "showing" the first 8 - check the scroll bar on the right.

Alternately use SE16 to copy the roles from the AGR table and paste via the clip board (if available via the task bar at the bottom of the popup)..

Disclaimer: I am not logged on and don't know which release you are on....

Very interesting.. never tried to select multiple roles this way but this should work!!

maybe there is a note that needs to be applied.

Oh, dear....

This is where I think you do not have a problem but a misunderstanding. Never mind, we see those quite often.

> See if you can reproduce this problem in your environment:

I had to start it first (minisap Nw2004), renew the license and wait for the transport tool to compile. You've got me busy here on a saturday

> 1. Start PFCG

done

> 2. Utilities -> Mass Transport

yep, watched it compile.

> 3. Click multiple selection button

yep

> 4. Enter a mask that would match more than 8 roles,

yep

> press F4

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

This is where the misunderstanding starts

> 5. Click select all (make sure more than 8 roles are selected)

No

> 6. Click copy button

No

> 7. Observe that only the first 8 role are actually copied to the multiple selection list

Instead, hit F8 where you have hit F4 and find out all roles that fit the mask will be entered into the transport.

You have mixed up the actual report selection and the search functionality of the selection screen. Play with it, it's fun.

One word of caution: Mass transport can cause perfromance problems and errors. I always try not to enter more than 500 roles into a transport at a time.

Jurjen,

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much! Next time please enjoy your weekend, especially for a silly user error like this.

I did anyway, don't worry, SCN is a hobby when posting answers and can only become work when posting questions ;-).

Another place where this often tricks me is transaction SE15.

The whole transaction is one big fat F4...
