Document numbering and UDO

I have a form linked to a UDO. This add-on has been running at 2 clients for a couple of years. The last month they started getting this error when they click add: "To generate this document, first define the numbering series in the Administration module".

Now I don't do anything with the document numbering and I have absolutely no code behind the add button. In the document number settings in Administration "Primary" are set as the default numbering series. The one client only has the Primary series and the other client has 2 document numbering series. They definitely have a default series assigned.

Why would this work for so long and then stop working all of a sudden?

PS: The clients are on SBO 2007A SP00 PL35 and the other on SBO 2007A SP00 PL06. When I upgraded the client's db from PL06 to PL35 on my machine it seemed to have solved the problem, but we haven't tried this on the client's server yet.
