Data Center migration

Hello Experts,

I have an assignment w (here an organization X had acquired an organization Y both having their own SAP landscape.

Now all the SAP systems in the data center of organization Y needs to be moved to the data center of organization X. All the servers will be newly provisioned in the data center of organization X but will be exactly the same in all terms. Also the host name and SID will remain same for the newly provisioned servers and SAP Applications.

The strategy that have been identified is Lift and Shift approach with array to array replication (SAN storage replication) from Y Data Center to X Data Center.

I have 2 questions in this regard -

- Do we have a quick checklist for preparing a migration and cut over plan for this?

- I believe with this approach (array to array storage replication) I need to use Homogeneous system copy with backup/restore method (correct me if I am wrong). Can this migration be sped up by using homogeneous system copy with export/import method?

Hi Amarnath,

I got more insight into my assignment and this is a like-for-like migration which where the method that will be used is data replication from one DC to another DC. Hence I don't think we would need to install SAP or perform export/import of DB. The only thing I believe we need to do is to stop SAP systems on hosts in old DC, start the replication process, stop the replication process once it's complete and start the SAP systems on the hosts in the new DC.

Can someone please clarify this?

Additionally, can someone please provide broadly the steps for cutover of such migrations?

Hi Sourabh,

We had a scenario where we had to move our on-premise SAP applications to AWS. More or less your scenario relates to this.

Using SWPM export/import is the ideal approach. But to speed up the process we have zipped file system of application server and un-zipped on the newly created host. As of hostname's changed from Onprm to AWS we had to change the profile parameters and bring up system. This is related to application server.

Coming to Database our DB team did back and restore on newly created host and brought up DB. we did not face any issues during and after the process. Our applications are running smooth.

I am just expressing my view to think of this approach, beside let others comment on this.
