brbackup needs to know if it will backup on the good tape. it obviously cannot read the physical label, so, it created one small file at the beginning of the tape. this file contains the tape's name.

so, when a backup starts, it read the first file, makes sure that this tape has a valid label. if so, it starts backups after the first file on tape.

so, if you do not label the tape, brbackup won<t be able to start because it will think that this tape is invalid... or it won<t start becasue it does not want to possibility overwrite a tape with some other kind of of backup on it.

Hi,

It's not advisable to initiaize tape every time before backup.

Use Brtools to initialize the TAPE.Login as <sid>adm

give command

Brtools

choose option

Backup & database copy

than

choose option

Additional Function

than choose option

Initialization of BRBACKUP tape volumes

than you get the following screen

Options for initialization of BRBACKUP tape volumes

1 - BRBACKUP profile (profile) ....... [initDEV.sap]

2 - Initialization type (initialize) . [rename]

3 ~ Number of volumes (number) ....... []

4 - Confirmation mode (confirm) ...... [yes]

5 - Message language (language) ...... [E]

6 ~ Tape volume names (volume) ....... [DEVB01]

7 - BRBACKUP command line (command) .. [-p initDEV.sap -i -l E -v DEVB01]

choose option 2 & give name force & enter

choose option 6 & give the TAPE(EX:-DEVB01) name.

(Check tape name in your init<sid>.SAP file )

& than press c & c & c........
