UWL Access from Non-SAP Applications

All -

I am looking for some information on ways to access a user's UWL from a non-SAP system. For example I would like to get a count of how many items they have, etc. Is this possible? If so can someone point me in the direction of some documentation/API/examples? Is this what the connector framework is for?
