Business Objects XI R2 Client Install

We are in the process of upgrading to BO XI R2 and have BusinessObjects Enterprise up and running. We will be making it available to our users through Desktop Intelligence, only. After struggling through stand-alone installations of the client on a few PCs, we are investigating doing a server install of the client - equivalent to a Shared Installation with Master Setup in BusinessObjects version 4.

We haven't found any documentation, or forum comments, that definitely state whether this is viable. Has anyone attempted, and hopefully succeeded, with this? Does anyone know of documentation that explicitly describes the process?

We would be most grateful for any help or comments you might have.

    Clive,

Unfortunately, ZABO install from server does not exist in XIR2 as it existed in v5 and v6. Below is a link which might help:

    Hello Clive,

Shared installations, which were possible in pre-XI versions of BusinessObjects are no longer available. Also ZABO (Zero Administration Business Objects) has been removed from the list of possibilities.

If you want to offer Business Objects Desktop Intelligence to your user, this will require an installation on the user's workstation. Also, when upgrading your XI version, make sure to upgrade your clients to the same version, as server and client versions should alway be kept in sync.

Installation of desktop applications such as DeskI can be done by using Client Tools distributions. These are slimmed down installation packages, with all server components removed. This means that they are quite a bit smaller and thus easier to deploy.

To simplify things, these installations can be done silently. If I'm not mistaken, this is something that is documented as well. If you're unable to find it, just have a look through the SAP Notes, I'm sure it's in there.

    Good luck!

    Kind regards,

    Kristof Speeckaert

Thank you to everyone who replied to this. I have set this thread to resolved because your answers make it clear that we can't set-up the client on a server but they open up the possibility of reducing the package size to make a silent install practical. This gives a fresh area for investigation - and possibly more calls for help.

The points allocation didn't work quite as I expected. So, my apologies, I shall attempt to rectify that.

I don't see if it was discussed but the webi rich client in XI 3.0 will return much of the functionality of "zabo" in 6.5. It will be downloadable from the server, have 3-tier connectivity configured on the server, and is much smaller than deski.

You may want to consider this option as well.

    Regards,

    Tim
