Should we buy Lumira if we're going to S4/HANA?

We've been told that since S4/HANA has dashboard capability it would be foolish to purchase Lumira for our shop as we could create dashboards with S4/HANA instead.

I don't think it's true but I'd like to confirm.

Thank you for your answer and patience. We have a 3rd party app that merges data from SAP with external data coming from our warehouse machines and writes it to sql databases residing external to sap. To simplify the question, if we wanted to create robust dashboards solely from data residing in SAP would SAP S/4HANA be adequate or should we look to a product like Lumira for that?

Hello, Not sure I fully understand. Why is the report writing to 1 SQL table outside of SAP? A report is usually doing read operations and not write. Is there data coming from external system(s), or all from ECC? If you have few data coming from external system , you may want to create an interface which save them to one or several table created in SAP S/4HANA (storing data in the HANA DB) and build your dashboard out of all these tables. This should not be used to bring all the company external data in SAP S/4HANA, because SAP S/4HANA is not to be a central Enterprise Data Warehouse such as BW or BW/4HANA, but if you have few data coming in, why not. Then regarding feasibility , I cannot promise anything (I have been developing ABAP reports for ECC, and sometimes an apparently very small business requirements (I would like this field as well ) increase difficulty and workload in a very tremendous way) , but I would recommend to make a mockup of your report in a SAP S/4HANA trial instance or sandbox using the Embedded reporting capabilities before buying an additional product, (which again, may NOT be as well the right SAP product to buy for your reporting needs, if you need additional reporting, this should be discussed with analytics people from your side and pre-sales person from SAP, I am not from analytics side) . Sorry for not being able to answer with a simple yes or no

Thank you for your answer and patience. We use a 3rd party application that writes Process Order data to sql tables outside of SAP. Other than that we don't use outside data.

Making the question simpler, assuming that all our data resides in SAP, do you think we could create robust dashboards using SAP S/4HANA independent of any other tool?

I do appreciate your suggestion to get the trial version.

Hello Elliot,

Embedded SAP S/4HANA reporting is based on Embedded Analytics. This is mostly "insight to action" operational reporting, and you can build your own views / Dashboard / KPI indicators. You will need to analyse current reporting needs (where does the data come from, what do the users want to do with them, what kind of display do they want, Lumira is ONE tool with specific role in the analytics offering of SAP) to assess which tools are necessary.

You may want to search for Embeded Analytics in the community, there are very nice blog about them, and you should log to the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Trial so you get a feeling about them. Its quick (few seconds), it's free, Nothing to lose, even if you aim at SAP S/4HANA on premise, you will "feel" . You can have a look at the sales person role for example, there is a guided step by step to create a reusable drill down reporting (End-user tool) . Check as well in your SAP support offering. Thank you for your answer. We have an On Time Delivery Report that combines data from several sap tables and writes it to 1 sql table (outside of SAP). Would be be able to build a dashboard off of the non-sap table using SAP S/4HANA or would we need a product like Lumira to create such a report?

Thank you for your answer. Let me add that we are on ECC right now and are considering moving to S/4HANA. Do you know if there is a large library of dashboards available and if the dashboards are customizable?

Hi Elliot - I believe there are pre-packaged items in S/4HANA, but what if you want to create your own dashboard applications? Then you may want to consider Lumira Designer/Discovery or SAP Analytics Cloud - it depends on your use case.
