Program Buffer Size

Dears,

We have one demo system of netweaver 2004s on SQL server with Windows 2003 server.

My RAM is 4 GB and paging memory is 16 GB.

My extended memory and PHY_MEMSIZE is set to 3 GB.

Initially my programme buffer size was 150 MB.As performance was not proper and swaps were there so changed my programme buffer size to 700 MB and then when I restarted my server,it was not coming up.Tried also with 600 MB but same issue then i tried 500 MB and then server started.

Can I know its reason as i have sufficient memory availabe then what is the root cause of it and programme buffer memory depands on which memory.

Please suggest.

Shivam

    Hi,

You need to read following SAP note carefully

Note 103747 - Performance: Parameter recommendations as of Release 4.0

The program buffer needs to be loaded into a single contiguous memory block. While you may have more than enough total memory available it will be broken up by various other memory objects. Some will move about with a reboot, but many have reserved locations based on where they were installed the first time they ran. SAP had a tool somewhere that helped you move things around to clear up a larger memory block but I haven't had to use it since we moved to 64bit a couple years ago.

      Hi Deepak,

Sorry, the solution I mentioned is for Unix not on Windows.

You me be having a problem of address space fragmentation. Can you please check this SAP Note. : 129813 - Windows: Problems due to address space fragmentation

Also just ensure that you have the /3GB switch set on for Windows.

      Thanks and Best Regards,

      Sunil.
