Upgrading SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 SP005 to SP009

I was wondering if upgrading SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 from support pack 5 to support pack 9 requires a migration, or if it is an in place upgrade. Thank you!

it can be both as the strategy you select is up to you.
You can do in-place upgrade or you can install Sp9 in the new system, then migrate content from your current system into new and retire old one.

Both have pro's and cons.

If you are doing the inplace upgrade, make sure you have back up of servers, DB FRS. In case something goes wrong, you can recover from backup copy.

Otherwise, if you want to do install on new server, and then promote the content using promotion management. If you have lot of custom thing, you need to make sure you apply those custom apps to the new server.
