EWM RF Serial Number Entry

Hi All,

I would be grateful if anyone could clarify the EWM RF Serial Number process.

I have read conflicting views on what the process should be. During RF pick confirmation, should the system automatically (after all the required validations) propose serial number entry?

OR

Is the serial number entry screen called only when a 'serial number' button is pressed?

I would guess that its the latter as I don't see any settings that make serial number capturing mandatory at the task confirmation point.

Has anyone designed a custom flow that is an improvement on the standard offering.

Seems odd that you have to reply on the picker to remember to enter the serial numbers. If they forget and it is flagged up at PGI stage, then the goods are all packed so very inefficient to then go and retrieve the serial numbers.

Regards

Guy

Hi Guy,

I guess you are looking for the batch management functionality which works nice for both EWM/ERP and very flexible in EWM/ERP.

What serial number validation is carried out in EWM? I know at a warehouse level you can't have the same product/serial number. But requirement A seems to allow anything to be entered. Does EWM assume that it is all controlled in ERP?

But then correcting in ERP seems inefficient.

No ,Its use for only documentation purpose.

Serial Numbers for Document Items( Please check the link for EWM Serial Number Documentation )

Please try to use batch management in stead of serial number if possible. I understand its difficult in business case.

Please let us know if you have further queries.

Hi Guy,

I agree on your points.I believe you are looking for the same functionality as batch management does in ERP/EWM.

What serial number validation is carried out in EWM? I know at a warehouse level you can't have the same product/serial number.

But requirement A seems to allow anything to be entered. Does EWM assume that it is all controlled in ERP?

Requirement A- Serial Numbers for Document Items.

Serial Numbers for Document Items

Entering and Editing Serial Numbers

ERP EWM Settings

Does EWM assume that it is all controlled in ERP? But then correcting in ERP seems inefficient.

No,Its only for documentation purpose in inbound /outbound.,Please check the above process step links.

Please let us know if you still have doubts.

Hi,

indeed, the standard flow is not very helpful. We just had the discussion in a class and I asked a developer and also tried a little bit so that I understand what happens. In general: the serial number is not a verification object. So if it is not necessary, it is not to be confirmed.

You also have to consider the serial number requirement you use.

A Serial Numbers for Document Items; During picking it is not required. But before GI you have to enter it in the outbound delivery order (assuming that the flag Serialization is set on the item type).

B Serial Numbers at Warehouse-Number Level: Same behavior. It is not mandatory to enter it in RF, but the ODO is blocked until you enter the SNs.

C Serial Numbers in Inventory Management: Depends... :-). If the full quantity of the bin is picked, then it is not necessary to enter the SN. But if only a partial quantity is picked, then entering the serial numbers is mandatory.

Hi,

Thank you both for your replies......sorry for late response, I didn't get a notification (still coming to terms with new SAP Community!).

Well, we made some progress. There is a BADI that you can use to force the serial number entry via RF.

But even this is a little strange as the serial number screen is presented AFTER confirming the destination HU!

So we are doing a further enhancement to present the screen after qty verification.

I really don't know what SAP were thinking here. If you don't use the BADI and don't remember to enter the serial numbers, then you have a problem at GI.

I do have a further question that arose during my testing:

What serial number validation is carried out in EWM? I know at a warehouse level you can't have the same product/serial number.

But requirement A seems to allow anything to be entered. Does EWM assume that it is all controlled in ERP?

But then correcting in ERP seems inefficient.

I personally did not configured it however if I go by the sap help it suggest that it can be configured both way,

1) Entering Serial number during picking

2) Work with predetermine Serial number (select SNum in the RF-supported transaction, EWM displays the predetermined serial numbers. in that case no need to remember the serial number, Picker will just press the SNUM button and can get the detail of predetermined Serial number)
