Multiple Adrresses for a Storage Location

Dear Friends

I understood we can maintain multiple adrresses for one storage location by using sequential address number.

I Just wanted to know is this feature is available in all versions of SAP R/3 (especially in 4.7 and below)?

And also pls explain me the relevence of this feature with one example atleast.
