How to notify a customer before a shipment?

Hello SAP gurus!

I am trying to figure out a way to systematically inform customer that we are about to ship an order. I know we have ASNs that generate to customers AFTER an order is shipped, but I need a way to notify them that it is about to. That way, they can stop the shipment if needed.

In XD03 --> Contact person, I noticed one of the functions is 93 Planning transport

Would this work as a way to communicate a shipment before it actually ships? Any other suggestions?

This is not related to CRM. Remove tag "CRM Master data" and add tag ERP.

A contact in XD03 is just a contact and a function just an attribute to the contact. It does not do anything without a further process around.

E.g. you would need a partner role that makes use of this contact.

You would need customizing to copy the partner role from the customer master into the partner of the document.

Further you would need to have a new message type "start doing something notification"

And finally you need a trigger for this message.

How long and why an ordered material should be stopped? Moreover, I don't think an end customer would expect to have such advance notification before shipping the goods. Once they ordered, it is obvious that the seller has to deliver the goods within the agreed time. Might be this can happen very rarely in which case, this requirement can be put on hold. Still if the client insists to have some functionality, may be you can explore EDI / Idoc functionality from VL01N
