Mvt type field selection and upgrades

I have a quick question...if we change the standard field selection for a particular movement type (say 501) will it be overwritten if we upgrade our system? I've done this in the past with no issues but am hearing from a colleague that if we change the field selection that they will be overwritten when we upgrade so she's suggesting a custom movement type which I don't think is necessary.
