Difference between Enterprise Portal Roles and R/3 (ECC) roles

can you explain how the portal Roles are different from R/3 (ECC) Roles ?

Portal roles only hold the iViews, worksets or pages and permissions to determine what level of ACL access is required...

ECC roles hold authorizations which has auth objects with specific auth field values..

the only connection is that the ECC roles appear as portal groups and you have to assign this group to a role and then assign it to a user.... u cant connect the group to a user....there is a whole lot of info on this ....start reading with this..
