Upgrade PI 7.11 dual stack to 7.4 or 7.5?

Hi experts.

We need advice on an old PI release 7.11 which our customer wants to upgrade; our doubt is whether to suggest an upgrade to 7.4 rather than to 7.5.

Consider that:

  1. Current PI 7.11 is dual stack and on the ABAP stack we have a complex custom monitoring tool we need to migrate on the new release
  2. We also have one additional client to handle logs of the afore mentioned monitor
  3. Currently we use ccBPMs and we also need to migrate them on the new release
  4. We must make an affordable offer for the customer and maybe going for the non-dual stack 7.5 might result in too expensive activities (especially for the points 1. and 3. of this list)

Can you confirm that a 7.4 upgrade (dual stack configuration) would result in an easier migration process and that will grant all existing functionalities to also work on the new release?

I think that, on the contrary, going towards PO 7.5 would be much more expensive considering the stack splitting, the ABAP monitoring tool migration, ccBPMs reconfiguration and SPROXY and IDoc interfaces flows migration. Am I right?

Any other suggestions and/or advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Davide.

Hello Aviv,

The latest version that supports Dual Stack is PI 7.5. While I would generally not recommend to take architectural decisions based on license considerations, if you wanted a PI 7.5 Dual Stack, I would upgrade to it. In my opinion, a fresh installation and migration would only make sense (and potentially a lot of sense by the way) if you were to move to Java only PO.

Hello Frank

Thanks for the quick replay.

Do you mean a PI 7.5 Dual Usage? (Not dual stack, two new systems with different SID).

Again, What is the license type of the new PI 7.5 dual usage system? (Volume Bases or CPU Based?).

Comment, the reason we need the ABAP is that we have ccBPM on our PI 7.11 system.

Thanks Again

Hello Davide,

I would not recommend an upgrade to SAP NetWeaver 7.4 PO at this point in time. While you could keep the dual stack, there would still most likely be a lot of adjustments needed and retesting necessary coming from SAP NetWeaver PI 7.11. Also, End of Mainstream Maintenance for SAP NetWeaver 7.4 is 31/12/2020, so you customer would most like have to upgrade again then with a lot of the efforts that you tried to avoid.

I would therefore suggest a proper integration assessment and subsequent roadmap towards NetWeaver PO 7.5, especially also since a proper integration architecture will be more important than ever with SAP S/4HANA.

Hello Frank

I have the same issue as Davide have, our goal is the preserve the PI license (volume based), if we will install a fresh PO install version (7.5) and migrate the PI interfaces including recreate the BPM the license will be changed to CPU.

What is the maximum version of PI that we can upgrade/migrate my PI system (7.11) and save the current license? do you recommended to upgrade the PI to 7.4 (dual stack) or PI 7.5 split system? shall we install fresh PI 7.5 split system and used the migrate tool for PI interfaces?

Thanks

Aviv Cohen.
