Suggestions on documenting a large CR report

I have a large report with 20+ sub reports and shared variables being passed. I find that using a spreadsheet to document where shared variables are being created and used through out the report helps with regards to how are shared variables are being used.

I looking for suggestion on how better to document my report objects to help cut down on the confusion and keep some sort of order as to what the report is doing. Any suggestions?
