Application Server restart

Hi there,

When ever my CMS server is retarted. Web intelligence and Web CMS cannot log on.

A restart of the Application Server (Business objects XI3) resolves this. Anybody know why the Application server looses connection to the CMS server?

Thank you.

I'm not sure if I understand you correct. Does this happen when you restart your Business Objects edge server or the CMS database(on a different maschine)? I'm not familiar with Business Objects Edge but i assume it is identical with Business Objects Enterprise. In this case application server would refer to e.g Tomcat or IIS which is used to hold the Web App.

Hello Tim,

My Business Objects application and CMS database are on seperate servers. Whenever the CMS sever is restarted for any reason I am unable to log to the application (via web portal). Only restarting the App server (BO) resolves loging into the application.

I have TomCat on the App server (BO).

Hi,

OK, you are restarting your seperate CMS database, the Server Intelligence Agent looses connection and is unable to restore connection until you restart your BO server. Did you check the status of your servers inside the Server Intelligent agent? Are they are running and enabled - especially the Central Management Server? Did you try to restart the Server Intelligence agent in your Central Configuration Manager manually. The Server Intelligence Agent runs as windows service. Can you check please the settings for the recovery tab?

That's it Tim,

I just had another instance where I had an interruption of connection to the CMS, Web Intelligence.

The service SIA is running and enabled. A restart of SIA service resolves the connection problem.

Settings on the SIA windows service recovery tab:

First Failure: Restart the service

Second Failure: Restart the service

Subsequent Failure: Restart the service

Reset fail count after : 0 days

Restart service after:0 minutes

Kind regds,

What do you mean exactly by instance of connection interruption to CMS, Webintelligence?

Did you loose the network connection between your CMS DB Server and your BO Server?

Please do the following: Open your Central Management Console and got to Servers. Double click on Central Management Server and verify that the checkbox "Disable Auto reconnect to system and auditing Database" is unticked.

Verify that both your CMS database and CMS Service are up and running and log in to infoview. Manually disrupt the network connection between cms database server and BO Server. Restore the network connection and verify that you are able to login to the CMC. Afterwards shut down and restart your cms database. Once your database is up and running wait a few minutes and verify if you are able to login to CMC.

Please let me know the outcome.

Tim

Hello Tim,

Just before I go through the findings for your suggestion, bear in mind that I do not want to manually restart the SIA should there be a break in connection.

-"Disable Auto reconnect to system and auditing Database" in the CMS is unticked

-CMS database and CMS Service are up and running

-log in to infoview is successful

-I am are able to login to the CMC after disrupting the network connection between cms database server and BO Server and restoring.

-When I shut down and restart your cms database I need to restart the SIA to be able to logon to the CMC, Infoview.

Kind regards,

If i understand correctly, the problem is "when CMS Database is restarted, login to CMS or Infoview is impossible until SIA is restarted" - is that correct ?

How long does it take for the CMS DB to restart ?

After CMS DB is up, can you get to "Manage Servers" in CCM ?

What is the reason for CMS DB restarts and how frequently it happens and during which part of the day ?

Reason I'm asking is - for proper operation of XI3 you need stable and always on CMS DB. If it goes down freaquently - it's a problem, which could cause DB corrupton and interruption of service.

In XIR2 CMS server would shutdown if connection to CMS DB is lost, in XI3 CMS server will continue to run in a limited capacity, until CMS DB connection is restored, after which time it should resume normal operations. If it does not, this could possibly be a bug. If you can, please raise a message with SAP BO support, so this issue can be properly adressed.

Hello Denis,

Logon to CMS is still not possible after restarting the SIA. Only a restart of the CMS server resloves that.

I think that it takes about 10 - 15 mins to restart. At one instance it took about 1 hour - there was a backup of some sort being done.

I am able to manage the Servers in CCM after the CMS database is up.

The CMS DB also runs the Data intergrator Databases. Not quite sure of the reasons for when DI guys taking the database down other than for backups.

This instance if CMS is not regular and at the known instances I am advised of when it will be taken down.

I have raised this with SAP BO Support as well.
