can debit card be used in payment card processing?

hi gurus,

i saw from sap online help, that it allows many kind of card category to be used in payment card processing, including credit card and debit card.

but it also said:

The payment card functions in Sales and Distribution (SD) allow for sales involving these categories of cards, with the exception of walking cards, which are supported by Human Resources (HR), and debit cards, which are supported by Retail (SAP Retail) using point of sale (POS).

is that true that debit card can only be supported by retail pos? we need to use that in standard sap. how can we do?

thanks very much in advance for your kindly help.

Daniel,

I've helped many companies configure SD to accept Debit Cards as a form of payment. The SAP documentation is accurate, with one caveat, that Debit Cards can only be supported in IS-Retail with a POS. That is true IF you wish to accept Debit Cards that require the entry of a PIN number. If you wish to accept offline Debit Cards which do not require the entry of a PIN number you can just configure that as a card type in SD and it will process just fine with the SD-FI workflow.

hi Eric Bushman, thank you very much, i think i have understood your meaning, but i still want to reconfirm it with my word.

the pin number is not the payment card number we specify in customer master data - payment card, right?

i can input the debit card type and number in sales document and sap will send it to bank to authorize first and settle it later on?

when authorizing, the bank just block the amount, and really deduct money when having received settlement requirement?

looking forward your kindly help, thank you very much.

Daniel,

The Account number of the card is usually 13,15 or 16 digits in length and is embossed on the front of the card. The PIN number is usually a 4 digit "secret" code that only the cardholder should know. It is not on the card, not on the magstripe, etc. When processing a transaction as a DEBIT CARD transaction the cardholder would enter that 4 digit code using a keypad to validate their permission for the transaction to be processed.

You are correct that if you are processing a DEBIT CARD using the Credit Card workflow (ie: you are processing an "OFFLINE DEBIT" transaction) then you can enter the DEBIT CARD number during order entry and SAP will submit that Account number for "authorization" just as it would with a Credit Card number. However, the issuing bank will determine if the funds are removed from the account at time of Authorization or at time of Settlement. Some DEBIT CARD transactions remove the funds at time of Authorization - some at Settlement. I'd recommend you discuss this with your clearinghouse partner and your middleware partner.

I hope this helps clarify the information for you!

Hi Eric,

Is it possible to have SAP R/3 do a authorization complete initially on the sales order for a gift card? Do the settlement on the gift card immediately after creating the sales order even before the shipment/delivery is processed?

Thanks.

Hi Eric,

I need some information on the Paymetric process related to Credit Card and Gift Card Priority.

Could you please let me know how we can prioritize the GIFT card first and then Credit Card in SAP.

Any custom logic to be implemented or any Configuration settings to be carried.

Example.

Sales Order with 2 line items.

Actual Card Amount.

1. GIFT Card - $100. 2. Credit Card - $200.

Invoice done for first Line Item and Amount Billed is $150.

In this case card should be consumed as below,

1. Gift Card - $100

2. Credit Card - $50.

Could you please let me know on this it would be great.

Thanks

Dinesh.

Did you ever find a solution to this question? We are implementing Gift Cards on our website as well as using a credit card. Today we do support credit cards. Maybe your solution will work for a gift card.
