3.X v/s 7.0 datasources

Hello All

I am Yanz and I am new to these forum. Experts, my question is

For a fresh BI implementation in 7.0, I want to use a lot of SAP datasources (R/3 based). In BI, the standard sap content for these datasources are still in 3.X format with infopackages, infosources, Transfer and update rules etc. These rules might have logic/specific stuff provided by SAP.

What should be our approach? Should we convert the datasources to 7.X so htat we can use DTPs which means all the TRs and URs are gone and I would have to rewrite all that logic? Or should I leave it at 3.X?

Later in production if I want to convert these to 7.X, how do I handle this?

Appreciate your feedback and I will give points surely

Yanz Zemik

What business area r u going to work in BI ???

For most fo businesses (like FI), the datasources are available as 7.0 version except few businesses like HR.

Even theye r available as 3.X datasources, u can migrate to 7.0 v.

So no need to woory abt version.

    Hi Yanz,

If you are comfortable with 3.x flow then you can create your flows in 3.x way i.e., transfer rules, Infosource, update rules.

And when you think if you want to use 7.0 flow you can create transformation on that 3.x flow itself. And both the flows will continue to run when you are confident with the 7.0 flow then you can migrate (Emulated Data source concept)

Generally this Emulated datasource has been provided by SAP for the upgradation scenarious from 3.x to 7.0, so that even after upgradation the 3.x flow contunes to run fine.

In case as you said it is a fresh Bi 7.0 implementation then you can create the 7.0 flow directly and if the data source on which you want to create transformation has a square box beside it, i.e., an emulated datasource then you need to migrate it first and then define transformation.

      Hi,

With regard to your question of which version of datasource to be used depends on the business requirement. SAP suggests to use 7.0 flow instead of 3.x flow where ever possible. After installing and activating the 3.x flow, no need to create the transfer rules and update rules logic in 7.0, you can simply create transformations using the transfer rules and updates. System automatically creat the mappings.

      Hope this helps.

      Regards,

      Sreenivas.
