sap installation in stand-alone pc

i am currently learning sap. i have installed sapgui 6.20 in my home pc for practice. my pc has net connectivity. during sap log on it seems that i need to have an application server. so is it possible for me to use sapgui 6.20 without any such application server? or do i need to download any other versions..

I Suggest you to go through SAP Marketplace website [service.sap.com] where ion Notes Search section you would find the relted installation guide.

I think Note # 860063 and/or Note # 682808 would be helpful to you.
