serial Numbers for materials

Hi, All......

kindly ellaborate what is the significance of using serial numbers for materials if matrl no. is already there?

and how it used in Production Order?

Also what is IMG settings for assigning serial numbers? I know the only basic tcodes like IQ01 to create it?
