Hi friends,
As we are going for an implementation of ECC6.0 on Oracle 10g on AIX5.3
In the prerequisites after creeating a File system, its recommended to mount the SAPDATA file system.
I would like to know why is it mandatory and what would be the effect if we dont keep these sapdata1, sapdata2, sapdata3, sapdata4 unmounted
Regards
Ayush
All the mount points you have mentioned above are absolutely necessary . Make sure they are of the right sizes before you start the installation .

Hi,
The file system has to be mounted if you need to access that f/s.
Mounting is a concept that makes file systems, files, directories, devices available for use at a particular location. It is the only way a file
system is made accessible.
I understand that you are not using the diks as Raw devices ..so you have crated the f/s .
So you need to mount them if you want them to access.
About /usr,/tmp,/var these the standard f/s that are there once we install the OS.
So these has to be in mounted state only. Some important files and dirs will be there in /usr as lib is under that etc.
Are you able to see these with mount (with out any flags) command at OS level means all these are mounted.
Next the /oracle/client,/oracle/SID/102_64 I feel these are required as we have lot of importtant files will be there in these directories.
And I see there is no harm having all these f/s in mounted state.
If the installation need it it will take it (use it) .I rather see some problem if some f/s is not mounted as it will be unavailable for use...
This is very general openion....I did not do any installations so..Wait for some more expert suggestions.
Thanks.

If you don´t mount them, you can´t use them.
You can, however, use the devices as RAW devices

a filesystem that is not mounted, cannot be used...easy as that! it's more than recommended - it's a must!
the sapdata file systems are used to store the data files of the database...

It's mandatory to mount as sapinst copies data to the directories. Have enough diskspace for each SAPDATA, say about 35GB. If the FS is not created it would end up in errors during installation or write to the local disk, and every change of running of diskspace.
Also SAPDATA1..SAPDATA4 are already predefined in your control.xml of the installation

Hi shaji & andreas,
Thanks for your valuable suggestions.
1. As you have said its essential to keep all sapdata files should be kept mounted before you perform the installation with sapinst, otherwise it would result in errors.
2. Secondly i wanted to know what all file systems (standard File System that we configure for SAP on UNIX) should be mounted before we perform the installation with sapinst. ?
3. is it only sapdatafiles which are to be mounted, no other file systems are required to be mounted (here i am specifically talking about the SAP File System) ?

Ayush,
The installation guide lists the directories for SAP and Oracle. You need /sapmnt/<SID> and /usr/sap/<SID> (plus /usr/sap/trans if you do not have one) mounted before the installation starts. Space must be available for all directories (SAP & Oracle) listed in the installation guide before you start the installation.

Hi RK,
Thanks for your valuable suggestion that made us aware that apart from sapdata1,sapdata2, sapdata3, sapdata4... we also have to mount the FS mentioned below
/sapmnt/<SID>
/usr/sap/<SID>
/usr/sap/trans
Also there are few more mount points which are listed below do you think i need to mount them also
/
/home
/var
/usr
/opt
/tmp
/oracle
/oracle/<SID>
/oracle/client
/oracle/<SID>/102_64
/oracle/stage/102_64
/oracle/<SID>/sapreorg
/oracle/<SID>/origlogA
/oracle/<SID>/origlogB
/oracle/<SID>/mirrlogA
/oracle/<SID>/mirrlogA
/oracle/<SID>/oraarch
/sapcd (used for dumping the sap DVD's)
I am confused about the above mentioned File System, Do i have to mount these File Systems also ?
Please advice as i have to begin my installations from today onwards.
Regards
Ayush
Ayush,
It looks like your not familiar with Unix file system concept, so I suggest that you workclosely withyour Unix admins to layout your file systems. (/, /home, /var, /usr, /opt, /tmp) are all standard file systems in Unix. They should be there already. You should be able to start your install if you have space for all the other directories listed in the installation manual.
