Upgarde NW 2004 to NW7.3 and ECC 5 to ECC6

Hi Guys,

I am going to upgarde below products and have some doubts .

1. NW 2004 to NW7.3 -This NW 2004 solution having NWDI, CMS and CBS and will have to upgrade all these component. Here below are my queries
   • If we upgrade to Nw7.3 then can we replace CMS with CTS+
   • If yes , What about existing NWDI objects . Can we use those old objects and transport through CTS+
   • Can we test CTS+ with ECC5 sytems (before upgarde to ECC6) to make sure all are good.

Provided you are still in doubt about the upgrade or you do not use the NW AS Java 7.3 full-scale opportunities...

Q.: If we upgrade to Nw7.3 then can we replace CMS with CTS+

A.: CTS+ is TMS + CMS or TMS + CM Services. This is configuration of 2 pieces of software STMS and NWDI. The word "replace" is not in place in the question, because this are different concept in the software logistics. The NWDI alone might transport customizations only in NW AS Java landscape, while CTS+ might do this in heterogenious system landscape - ABAP and non-ABAP.

All in all, if it is necessary to use very detail granularity of the transport units (f.e. tranport a single activity) and/or it is a required to transport for ABAP system, then CTS+ is a MUST. Otherwise, the business requirements might be met with SCA transport - then the usage of NWDI (no mater whether CMS or CM Services) is enough.

Q.: If yes , What about existing NWDI objects . Can we use those old objects and transport through CTS+

A.: The existing ones you will have to migrate to 7.30 so the end user to be able to use them in the new NW AS Java environment.

This you might do with CMS or CM Services and if they are NWDI this means they are transported to run (be executed on the AS Java) so the STMS does not play any role here. Everything is done in NWDI entirely.

Q.: Can we test CTS+ with ECC5 sytems (before upgarde to ECC6) to make sure all are good.

A.: With NWDI one might transport customization to older releases. The opposite is not correct. More elaborations in this blog:
