Default Warehouse In Item Master

What does the Default Warehouse header in the Item Master template in DTW correspond to in the SAP Inventory Module? What field does it link to and populate? Does this field need to be filled in or can it be left blank -- will it affect or prevent transactions? We only have 1 warehouse location.
