what is master data?

Hi Experts,

What is Master data? What type of issues can we have with Master data?

Can someone explain briefly?

I checked websites and am looking for an answer in an Experts perspective or view.

Master Data are data records which will facilitate to execute an Transaction. Some of the Master Data from SD & it's Integration Point of view are Customer Master, Material Master, Price Master (Condition Record), Equipment Master, G/L Accounts & so on... Based on input parameter & configuration, when these Master Data are captures in a Transaction, it by default brings in the fields maintained for the same through different Linkage withing the system. For Eg: Incoterms, Terms of Payment, Shipping Condition, etc are by default captured from Customer Master & say Gross Weight, Net Weight, etc are captured from Material Master.

The common issue which can be quoted as an example of problem is if Account Assignment Group of Customer & / or Material is not mationed in Customer or Material Master respectively, the transaction will go upto Billing, but not release to accounts. This of course depends on setting maintained in Transaction Code: VKOA

Hence, proper maintainace of Master Data is likely to reduce the error's to a great extend.

In short I can say that without proper master data maintainance, you will not be able to complete any transaction successfully.

For example, if you want to create a sale order, unless you input all the required datas in master data, your sale order cannot be saved and keep on throws some error.

Similarly, the material master is used by all components in the SAP Logistics System. The integration of all material data in a single database object eliminates redundant data storage. In the SAP Logistics System, the data contained in the material master is required, for example, for the following functions:

- In Purchasing for ordering

- In Inventory Management for goods movement postings and physical inventory

- In Invoice Verification for posting invoices

- In Sales and Distribution for sales order processing

- In Production Planning and Control for material requirements planning, scheduling, and work scheduling

Like this, each and every master datas holds key importance in SAP.

-->Data life will be more

Example:- Material master , Customer master,Price master etc...

Issues with master data

-->No account document generated while releasing the invoice to the accounting.

-->Account assignment group not assigned in Customer master or Material master record.

-->Route determination will not be determined if you don't maintain the transaportation zone in the customer master.

-->Tax determination will not takes place if you don't maintain the tax classification in customer master or in the material master.

Hello Jamie,

Master Data in business terms mean data of your customers, vendors etc.. This forms the basis of doing daily business transactions.

For example, when you are creating a sales orderit should be created against a Customer.. The Customer details like his own dataaddress, a/c no, and also his preferences like where does he/she wants the goods to be shipped to? or, he wants the shipping immediately & he wants to pay it in installments--all this data and lot of other data is captured and called as Master Data.

Generally, most of the customer's data remains fairly static over a period of time.

Similarly, we have Vendor Master(vendors), G/L Accounts etc..

There is another term called Transacation data, which represents your daily business transaction for ex.a sales order, purchase order.

Hi,

Master Data: Information that is stored on a long-term basis in the system and can be incorporated into individual transactions. Master Data remains the same over a long period of time.

Examples:

The master data of a cost center contains the name of the cost center, the person responsible for the cost center, the corresponding hierarchy area, and so on.

The master data of a vendor contains the name, address, and bank information for the vendor.

The master data of a user in the SAP System contains the user's authorizations in the system, the name of their default printer, their start transaction, and other information.
