We have just upgrade our PRD instance from EHP4 to EHP8.

Now we are refreshing our PRD to DEV as per our management requirement. We need the DEV to be up as soon as possible for support, development and etc. Now we are stuck. Show stopper.

We have restore the database/data/exe/profile/services and adapted the necessary environment, profile, services file and etc.

OS: HP-UX 11.31

DB: Oracle 12c

Release: SAP ERP 6.0 EHP8

When we use the startap command to startup the database started, ASCS started and DVEBMGS30 started:

ecc6dev:devadm 21> startsap
Checking DEV Database
Database is not available via R3trans
-------------------------------------------
Trying to start DEV database ...
Log file: /home/devadm/startdb.log
DEV database started
Starting Startup Agent sapstartsrv
OK
Instance Service on host ecc6dev started
-------------------------------------------
starting SAP Instance ASCS05
Startup-Log is written to /home/devadm/startsap_ASCS05.log
-------------------------------------------
/usr/sap/DEV/ASCS05/exe/sapcontrol -prot NI_HTTP -nr 30 -function Start
Instance on host ecc6dev started
Starting Startup Agent sapstartsrv
OK
Instance Service on host ecc6dev started
-------------------------------------------
starting SAP Instance DVEBMGS30
Startup-Log is written to /home/devadm/startsap_DVEBMGS30.log
-------------------------------------------
/usr/sap/DEV/DVEBMGS30/exe/sapcontrol -prot NI_HTTP -nr 30 -function Start
Instance on host ecc6dev started

However when we did "ps -ef | grep sap" we only get the below.

All other process from DVEBMGS30 was not started.

ecc6dev:devadm 36>
ecc6dev:devadm 36> ps -ef | grep sap
devadm 7957 1 0 21:24:08 ? 0:00 sapstart pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_ASCS05_ecc6dev
devadm 7977 7957 0 21:24:09 ? 0:00 en.sapDEV_ASCS05 pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_ASCS05_ecc6dev
devadm 7734 1 0 21:23:57 ? 0:00 /usr/sap/DEV/ASCS05/exe/sapstartsrv pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_ASCS05_ecc6dev -D
devadm 7976 7957 0 21:24:09 ? 0:00 ms.sapDEV_ASCS05 pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_ASCS05_ecc6dev
devadm 10503 4598 0 21:36:57 pts/0 0:00 grep sap

We tried to find any log file in work dir. However to our surprise nothing was created.

In the home dir of /home/devadm, the startsap.trc, startsap_DVEBMGS30.log, startsap_ASCS05.log, startsap_saphostagent.log did not show and error.

We even tried the following:

startsap DVEBMGS30

/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/sapcontrol -nr 30 -prot NI_HTTP -function Start

It run, but the processes did not come up.

When we tried to stopsap, we notice the stop did run forever and did not stop.

Checking DEV Database
Database is running
-------------------------------------------
stopping the SAP instance DVEBMGS30
Shutdown-Log is written to /home/devadm/stopsap_DVEBMGS30.log
-------------------------------------------
/usr/sap/DEV/DVEBMGS30/exe/sapcontrol -prot NI_HTTP -nr 30 -function Stop
Instance on host ecc6dev stopped
Waiting for cleanup of resources
.................................................................................................................

We even tried to stop sap, clean the .sapstream files, cleanipc and reboot the OS. Nothing works so far.

The one weird thing that work if we manually start it with:

sapstart pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_DVEBMGS30_ecc6dev

Would appreciate you could let us know what have change in EHP8. In EHP4 we don't have such issue and we can easily start it.

We couldn't figure out what is wrong and that the reason we need some help here.

Can you use SAP Management Console, by calling http://ecc6dev:53013/ and try to start, it will give you visual help and you can call the log files.

Secondly, did you go to devadm using su command from root? Can you check the environment variable?

Have you already checked the log files under directory /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS<nn>/work/ and /usr/sap/<SID>/ASCS<nn>/work?

Hi Steven,

As mentioned on Note
#1763593 - Starting and stopping SAP system instances - startsap/stopsap are deprecated
startsap/stopsap commands are deprecated. You can either use SAP Management Console (SAP MC) or the SAP command sapcontrol instead.

You mentioned that DVEBMGS30 was starrted, but no process running or file created on work folder. Is that right?
First check if profile used (pf=/usr/sap/DEV/SYS/profile/DEV_DVEBMGS30_ecc6dev) is correctly starting application server. Then, check stderr* files that should be located
under work folder.

Regards,
Raquel
