Portal Newbie needs help in getting started.

Hi All,

I want to get started in portal development. What do I have to download, what books do I have to read. I need something that'll get me started.

Thanks,

John.

      Hi Anil,

To add a bit to Blag's advice, perhaps you should reconsider whether you want to be a contributor at SDN or a moderator?

Moderating is more about watching the forum to keep some law and order. You need to read more of the questions than before (I read all of them in my area) and not rush in to answer them (unless they are unpopular ones which no one else wants to get involved with), or points gamers who actually don't care or have not thought about the content of their post.

You also need to read more of the answers, as faith in the quality of answers varies proportionately to the eagerness to earn points (in my experience), and is normally disproportionate to the number of points (unless it is a very short-lived points-injection, but for those there are also tools). Hunting down points hunters is another moderator task which some of the more active moderators have taken upon themselves. There are also many, many contributors who are alert and active in this area as well, and combined together do a better job of it than the mods ourselves.

So what you should be trying to do is: create a forum environment where participants and contributors feel a bit "protected" from spammers, and anything in the answers which is wrong or even harmfull will be "intercepted" by a moderator. Sometimes even questions are wrong (believe it or not :-).

      That is active moderating.

If you don't want to do that, or it's not your style, then rather stick to contributing.

      Cheers,

      Julius

    • Anil:

With all respect....What are you doing??? You're supposed to be a Moderator...We more than no one must respect the rules of engagement...Which includes...

      • No links farm allowed.

      • Ask for points is forbidden.

I have to reported this, because I think that some actions must be taken....How can be expect people to behave when our own Moderator and not behaving?

      Greetings,

      Blag.

Ok First thanks to all trying to help however my question is still unanswered. I also must clarify I know Java programming but am a newbie when it comes to SAP. I have 2 specific questions and one thing to point out.

1.)Do I have to download SAP Netweaver 7.0 Trial under the download section at this site.?

2.) I'm not too big on ebooks or reading off Webpages. So what books should I consult.?

As for the links posted, I think most of them seem to be dead and thus useless but thanks anyway. All help is appreciated.

Please accept our apologies. There is a certain underthread within your thread. However, an advantage is that your question will be given additional attention and you should see the view number rise rapidly...

      Kind regards,

      Julius

    Hi John,

you might want to look at the most up-to-date version of the official [Portal Developer's Guide|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/1f/4554426dd13555e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm] for NetWeaver 7.0.

    Regards,

    Anne
