Setting Control Properties Dynamically

I am broaching the world of Crystal Reports in VB .Net 2003. I think I have a pretty good idea of how things work with formulas, etc. but I need to be able to set field properties dynamically, such as .Left and .Width.

My case is that I want to report timelines, much as a scheduling program. In MS Access I can override a Report's Detail_Format function and using a rectangle to represent the timeline I could adjust its position, width, color, etc.

I don't know how to do this with Crystal Reports. I have tried looking at the formulas to do something like .Left = x but apparently this is not allowed. In VB code I tried looking for events that I could capture to set .Left and .Width at runtime (for each data record) but no luck. I thought about using a chart but that didn't seem to provide what I want.

So how to do this? Is it possible? Can we build our own custom controls with .Net?

Thanks
