Want to speed up Homogenous System copy to minimize donwtime

Hello SAP Basis/DB experts,

We are upgrading our SAP hardware for Memory and CPU for our ECC6 EhP6 system.

We are on oracle 12c and HPUX 11.31.

On new hardware everything is going to remain same as in HPUX 11.31 ,Oracle 12C, Same ECC and net-weaver version. Currently System copy using cold backup and restore taking time. I am wondering if you can share your experience to make this downtime smaller.

What all steps can be done earlier etc. How can I minimize backup and restore time/any other method? Is there any option like System cloning etc.

R3load based system copy even with optimizations and parallel export and import will take some time to complete. You are basically creating the target system from scratch. You also need downtime to export the source database which I believe is the production system. How much time does it take now to restore the database? I the past I have used parallelism when doing the restore. This is something you should check with the backup specialist to see the possible solutions. Regarding the second recommendation about Oracle standby database - I am still wondering how you can speedup the restore operation by creating standby database on the target server. You still do a restore here and based on what you have said this is where you are losing time. In the past I have used Flashcopy solution from IBM to clone a database to a secondary node in a matter of seconds. I am not sure whether this solution can be used on HP-UX but it is worth inquiring about it. Similar solution is available from EMC as well. You should probably speak to the backup solution provider or vendor to see if they have such solutions to offer.

Hello, I see you use method simple or more sophisticated. I mean: Oracle Standby, Dataguard, GoldenGate, Quest SharedPlex and SAP Tools R3load with DistMon.

my suggestion: saving time with low cost: Oracle Standby Database or Dataguard

1.Create Oracle standby database on DB Target Server, using Backup of DB Source (Online or offline Backup)

2.Restore and sync applying Archive Logs

Thank you Jairo. Only thing is we did not try online backup and restore method earlier and now when trying for production would like to go with same method (cold backup and restore) to avoid any unknown issues.

I am wondering is there any way to make backup faster and restore of cold backup faster.
