Web Elements Jump start

I was very excited at the introduction of the web elements functionality shown at the User's conference. Now that I've finally had a chance to load the functions into our repository and have the basic demos included in the web elements download working, I wanted to move on and modify one of our existing reports that take a beginning and ending date as search criteria. I quickly discovered, I don't quite understand the architecture of how this works. It's great I can add all these web controls to my report, but how do I connect a calendar control and the date selected to the selection criteria of the report? I'm not sure I'm following how this technology is plugged together. I tried publishing the additional sample reports to our repository but for some reason most fail with a message indicating the date could not be loaded from report. The hospital report is the only one that loads but also fails with:

Report Linking Error

Back

STR_ID:IDS_OPENDOC_REPORT_SOURCE_ERROR

STR_ID:IDS_OPENDOC_REPORT_CANNOT_FIND_ERROR

I'm not concerened with fixing the sample reports but rather I'm trying to find the one knowledge nugget to get me started on connecting an input control to the selection criteria. Anyone have "simple samples" to look at.
