dialog-response-time without Z-transactions / Z-reports

Dear community,

we are looking for a way to evaluate the dialog response time in solution Manager for a managed system without having the Z-transactions / Z-reports in the calculation (optionally also in the SLR) and to report them automatically.

SAP does not offer anything in the Solution Manager. Does anyone have a solution, e.g. also via a plug-in, an in-house development or, if necessary, via a separate tool?

Hi Michael

SAP doesn't offer anything isn't really true but not anything that is really end-user friendly, easy to use would be something I can agree with.

I would love it if SAP could provide reporting inside of SAP Solution Manager in an easier fashion still but there are a number of capabilities with which you can actually use to achieve this, unfortunately, they are on the more complex side of town in terms of knowledge needed and not as nice and integrated as you would want them to be. At least when the goal is to really send out a report in an automated fashion.

If you want to achieve monitoring, dashboarding, embedded reporting inside of SAP Solution Manager without sending the information out as a report in an automated fashion, it will be easier to achieve.

A number of things that exist (different options if you like):

1) Advanced Monitoring

There is "advanced monitoring" as part of Technical Monitoring which you can use to configure monitoring for transactions (and thus afterwards also report on them since you can store the data in BW)

https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/TechOps/Advanced+Monitoring+Overview+in+SAP+Solution+Manager

1) ST03N statistics

There are ST03N statistics which you can consume via Embedded BW (Bex Query Designer / Bex Query Analyzer) or which you can consume (or bring across to) with BW and thus also consume on BusinessObjects BI. You can basically create your own queries and thus reports since all that data is stored in BW Infocubes as well. You can use newer BW toolsets if available as well.

Since you want to report on performance data of transactions and reports, this could definitely provide a solution to you. Downside in SAP Solution Manager is that BW loading of data is very specific to SAP Solution Manager and when something breaks (configuration breaks because of changes made) you only notice it once you refresh the data in your report. Not ideal in other words. You would need to ensure stability of the monitoring / performance metrics in terms of data being stored and processed by Solution Manager.

Another difficulty can be interpreting existing BW queries from SAP to then build your own. Some are easy to understand, some are really hard to understand and a lack of documentation is often problematic.

I played around with this and I have some customers who use BW queries to report on SolMan "technical" data such as performance data some years back already:

https://blogs.sap.com/2015/04/17/checking-out-sap-lumira-bw-query-connectivity/

I used the concept for a couple of customers who have used it for reporting purposes.

In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, you have the Dashboard Builder functionality also which can consume multiple sources:

https://blogs.sap.com/2017/02/28/sap-solution-manager-7.2-dashboard-builder/

It can also consume KPI's from SAP's KPI Catalog:

The question can be, why do you need to have a report as output, why not a dashboard with tiles instead?

Best regards

Tom
