Remove number range assignment for unused objects

Hi SAP experts,

We would like to know if it is safe to remove assigned number ranges for objects (example: sales document types maintained in t-code VOV8) that are not used (per business process). We would like to do this to ensure that the unused objects will not in any way created thereby using the number range assignment, especially those sharing with the actual objects used.

Example: We only use document types A, B with number range 01 and 02, respectively. But per configuration, unused document types C and D are assigned with the same number ranges.

Note that we are only deleting the number range assignment, and not the number range itself.

    Hi,

If business doesn't want users to create Sales document for Document type C and D then you can Block the Sales Document Type itself. No need to remove number range assignment.Similarly, you may create a new number range and assign it to these Document types.

      Hi,

      Will check in transaction VOV8.

What I mean in stating "or available for other objects/master data." is to know if blocking is available for other objects or master data grouping with number range assignment.

      Thanks,

      Kenneth

Your reason for removing the Number range assignment from un-used Objects like Sales Document is to prevent unintended mis-use in future.

For this purpose, I would suggest to look at other options like:

    1. Authorizations (Update the users roles to allow them to create on the required Sales Documents, etc)

    2. Restrict the usage of Sales Documents per Sales Area.

    3. Enterprise Structure assignments and SD Document Copying control to reflect only valid Business scenarios.

    Thanks,

it is in general safe to remove the assignment. Just let your colleagues know about the reason to avoid that they add it back again after they get a ticket from a user who got a message that a number range assignment is missing. Too many of us focus just technically on solving an error situation and may not come to the conclusion that the document type should not have been used.
