Auditing a CR Report?

Post Author: Dominic

CA Forum: Formula

I'm adapting numerous spreadsheets into CR and have run into a dilemma. While the spreadsheets are sort of old school and boring, the formulas and logic are easily audited. This saves me loads of time explaining things. My new CR reports are sweet but I don't want to have to explain the logic and formulas.

Is there a method of providing (easily) the logic and formulas to somebody wishing to audit a report?

You can export the report to a 'Report Definition File' (in v.XI, at least). It might be a start... you'll get - amongst all the info about where fields are positioned and how they are formatted - the definitions of the formulas.

    eg:

Name: {@printed_on_subtitle} Formula: "This Report was printed on: "+totext(currentdate,"dd/MM/yyyy")

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have V12.0.0.549 and there's no option to Export as a Report Definition File. There's reference to the format in the help system but there's no obvious way to it that I can find. I'm assuming that File|Export should give me that option in the pull down, if that's incorrect maybe there's more light to be shed on this subject. Surely, others have had to have reports audited at some point?

Hmm.. I just installed a (demo) copy of CR2008 (v 12.0.0.549) and the 'Report Definition' option is there when looking in the 'Format' dropdown in the Export Report dialogue box.

Have another look - failing that, perhaps it's one of the export options that doesn't get installed by default when installing Crystal? I always choose to install everything... I can't believe they would remove the option (but I could believe some developer forgot to enable it for the final build!).

I don't know what the deal is. I just went through the installation again and selected all the exporting options from the "Modify" sections in CR2008 Application Maintenance and it's still not available. Lotus Notes isn't available either. I think I'm going for the uninstall re-install path at this time. I'll keep you posted. This may clear up some other weirdness too.

cheers.Ok that didn't work either. I still have no option to export to a Report Definition. I think I will attempt to install on my 2nd PC. See if it's workstation related.
