reporting on common prefixes

Hello, I'm using CR11

I need to report on stock that have a common prefix (first 7 letters), but can have many variables.

e.g. 10/0686x, 10/0686wx, 10/0686rg, 10/0686xdown, 10/0686wxup and many more - but I just want to know how many 10/0686 widgets sold, no matter the flavour.

What I like to know is what would be the function, I'm thinking of ...... left(item_id), 7)="" but to no avail

Any ideas?
