VB.net Crystal vs. Crystal XI R2

Post Author: merylsmith

CA Forum: .NET

We are preparing to migrate a VB 6 application which used Crystal 9 to a VB.net application using Crystal XI.The VB developer doesn't want to install CR XI R2 on his development machine for fear it may mess up his environment. 1. Are there any differences between the version of Crystal that came embedded with VB.net (Visual Studio 2005) and Crystal XI R2?2. Does he need to install CR XI R2?3. Is there any special order of installation ( which comes first Visual Studio or CR XI ?)Thanks very much!Meryl Smith

    Hi,

VS2005 ships with a bundled edition of CR.NET 2005 - it is version 10.2. Crystal Reports XI R2 is version 11.5. The bundled edition is a free version that has some limitations (e.g. database driver access).

You do not need CR XI R2 Developer to develop with VS2005 / CR.NET 2005, however you can not design reports in CR XI R2 and expect them to run in a bundled edition application. BOBJ doesn't support running v11.5 reports with v10.2 runtime files.

If your developer has VB6 and VS2005 on the same machine then he will change VB6 so that CR XI R2 is integrated (as it will be in VS2005). If you need to maintain your VB6/CR9 environment you will have a difficult time getting CR9 running correctly in VB6 after installing CR XI R2. It can probably be done, but I don't know the steps.

The install order is always Visual Studios first, and then CR XI R2 Developer edition second.

    I hope this helps!

    EJ
