can we create reports with out creating universe?

hai,everyone.i have some doubts in businessobjects and they are1)is it businessobjects( used to create reports like webintelligence) and desktop intelligence are same? 2)can we create reports without creating universe?if yes how is it possible?please anybody know answers to this questions pass me the information.

Answers to your questions:

1)Is it businessobjects( used to create reports like webintelligence) and desktop intelligence are same?

A: WebIntelligence and Desktop Intelligence are two verticals of BusinessObjects Application.

Both are used for Reporting purpose but both are not same. WebIntelligence, as the name suggests, allows

you to access reports through web. This is possible when all users saves reports on Enterprise.

In Desktop Intelligence, you can do this by exporting the reports to the repository. In WebIntelligence, you can publish the report in any of the folders, for example Public Folders.

Desktop Intelligence, as the name suggests, allows you to access the reports in the Desktop(local machine).You can also access the reports by importing them from repository or by logging into any server machine.

2) Can we create reports without creating universe?

A: Yes, we can create reports in Desktop Intelligence without using universes. This is; however, not possible in WebIntelligence. In Desktop Intelligence, you can use FreeHand SQL, Stored Procedures, Personal Data Providers, etc.. in order to create reports. Creating report using Stored Procedure is a little difficult as compared to the other two options.

In Free Hand SQL, even though you don't need to create a universe but still you need a shared or a personal connection pointing the database.

Hi,

I'm not sure you are understanding the functionality of webi/deski in XIR2. The answer is no they can't report without universes. But why would you want to? If building reports with 1 tool is what you want then I'd suggest using Crystal Reports. When using deski/webi the universe serves as a metadata layer allowing you easy formatting of objects, measures, and dimensions. If you are trying to use deski without connecting to enterprise then you can create a universe with a shared connection and share it with any deski user locally without logging into enterprise. Currently webi can only be accessed from enterprise because it is a java reporting tool designed to run in a web portal (called infoview). Although I can't give any details the next version of XI may have a local webi client but this is currently unavailable.

Please explain what it is you want to accomplish and we can tell you which tools would be best.

i dont think that you can create a report in the webintelligence without creating a universe

but you can edit this query using the query panel, as long as the selected itmes in the panel match with ur query columns specialy with the data types
