What is the SAP recommended way to consume a read only HANA procedure with BO tools?

What is the SAP recommended approach to consuming a read only AMDP with BO front end tools (analysis office, WEBI, etc), either directly or indirectly?

Further information:

My system Netweaver 7.5 SP7, HANA 1.0 SPS 12, BO 4.2 SP3, Analysis for Office Version 2.3.0.57241

I am looking for something similar to the following: In Business Objects Analysis for Office, I can directly insert a datasouce that consists of CDS views and build a report on it. Ideally I would like to do the same thing for a read only Abap Managed Database Procedure (AMDP), but an AMDP does not appear to be available to accomplish this. Or maybe I cannot connect directly, is it possible to connect indirectly? I need a stored procedure (AMDP), because the requirement is to loop around a view passing the results from the first view the next view.

I have tried the following:

  1. Analysis for Office consumes Calculation View (script, not graphical) which consumes a read only AMDP. This works, but I need input parameters that accept multiple entries. Multiple entries are only supported for graphical calculation view, not the script view, at least on my current system.
  2. CDS view table function implemented by method AMDP. This does not appear to work. This makes the AMDP work similar to a CDS view, but it has restrictions. One of which appears to be that it is not available to insert as a datasource for Analysis Office. I used the same annotations in the CDS view as I used for regular CDS views (not table function). Annotation - @Analytics:{dataCategory:#CUBE}
  3. NOTE: the AMDP imports values and exports a data table. It performs read only operations. It does not update data. My BO system connects to an SAP ECC system where the AMDP resides and retrieves data from.

  • It would be better to update your original post with that info as not many people look thru comments.
Also, looks like the tag selection is not proper as well, as you need BO semantic layer experts, not platform experts. They do cross over, but not always.
    I'll fix your tags.

You can create UNV universe to consume HANA procedures. UNX universe is not supported HANA procedures.

    • 1. Right now UNX does not support HANA procedures. Not sure why? UNV will not be going away anytime soon. So don't worry.

      2. What type of connection used in UNIVERSE? Did you use JDBC connection?

    Hello Jawhar,

Thanks for your answer, but I have a couple of concerns.

    1. As I understand it UNX is the preferred go-forward method to use. And UNV will eventually be sunset. So why would this be the preferred way to consume a HANA procedure from BO tools?

    2. We tried to build a UNV as you suggested. Anyway we also only saw procedure table types. We could not find any actual procedures. We checked for my custom AMDP and also some SAP AMDP, both only show the type, not the procedure. Since it extremely hard to search for an object, it is possible that we missed the procedures somehow. NOTE: I can see my AMPD and SAP AMDPs in eclipse/hana studio just fine, so authorization should not be a problem.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Jawahar,

We are using a JDBC connection and we still only see database procedure table types, but do not see any actual procedures.

    Thanks,

At this time Stored procedures for any database are only availble in the UNV Universe.

When creating the UNV Universe you must select a check box for stored procedure universe. Stored Procedure Best Practice.

There are a set of limitations for stored procedures.

Otherwise there is also a Best Practice for universe on Hana. This would be connecting to Hana Views. Best Practice Hana Guide

    Kindest Regards,
