I am working in DXC technologies as a Solution Architect and we are using Business Object 6.1.3 for three applications . As part of Application modernization , we need to upgrade Business Object , I am planning to use SAP BO 4.x instead of Business Object 6.1.3

Please clarify the following questions....

is SAP BO 4.x is exact replacement of Business Object 6.1.3?

is more technical change required in my application if I choose SAP BO 4.x?

What is the system requirements for BO 4.x?

Where to download PAM for SAP BO 4.x ?

What is the replacement for Web Intelligence 2.5? is it separate software (OR) is it bundled with SAP BO 4.x?

are SAP BO and SAP BI same?

Thanks

Saravanan

In addition to Amit's brilliant answer on the upgrade path, here are some answers to your other questions:

is SAP BO 4.x is exact replacement of Business Object 6.1.3?
It is not apples to apples. you are talking about 2nd generation to about 6th generation releases.
Technologies like Business objects documents (later called DeskI) will need to be converted to WebIntelligence documents (although they can exist in 4.x repository).

is more technical change required in my application if I choose SAP BO 4.x?
you will need 64-bit OS and more CPU/RAM/Disc space resources.

What is the replacement for Web Intelligence 2.5? is it separate software (OR) is it bundled with SAP BO 4.x?
WebIntelligence 4.x is the replacement. Your webi documents will need to be migrated to wid files in 3.1 from which they will be upgraded to 4.x using the UMT tool.

are SAP BO and SAP BI same?
These are all major versions. SAP BO became SAP BOE (Business Objects Enterprise) in 3.x version and evolved into SAP BI Platform in 4.x

Hi Shiva,

Thank you for detailed explanation

Is it separate migration steps required for SAP BI and Web Intelligence 4.x?

Please explain migration steps for both Business Object 6.1.3 to SAP BI 4.X and Web Intelligence 2.5 to Web Intelligence 4.x.

Thanks

The only think I can add - you'll need to plan your new systems from scratch, use following page to properly size them :

https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/Sizing+and+Deploying+SAP+BusinessObjects+BI+4.x+Platform+and+Add-Ons

p.s.
I do not think it will be possible for you to migrate from 6.x to 4.x due to financial, timing and resource allocation restrains modern businesses place on IT.
I think you are better off designing everything new from scratch.

There is no direct upgrade path from BO 6.1 to BI 4.X.First you need to migrate all content on BO XI R2 or BO 3.1 environment. and later upgrade in BI 4.x version.

check attached link.

https://blogs.sap.com/2016/08/15/how-to-plan-a-successful-migration-from-pre-xi-bo-to-bi4x/

BI 4.X versions are not the same as BO 6.1.S many changes at system architecture and reporting level from BI 4.X.BO server component are 64 bit form BI 4.x

https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/BI+4.0+New+Features+and+Changes

https://archive.sap.com/documents/docs/DOC-43663

For system requirement check attached PAM link of BI 4.2.

https://support.sap.com/content/dam/launchpad/en_us/pam/pam-essentials/SBOP_BI_42.pdf

If you are looking for upgrade then go with BI 4.2 version (Latest support pack is SP05) as BI 4.0 is again old.
