Hi
System Catalog/Landscape Directory => a place wherein we create the Technical and Business Systems.
Software Catalog/Component Repository => a place wherein we create the Products and Software compenents.
To be more clear:
Software catalog
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/a2/2999ef97ea2b4790165f9ca5c05c41/frameset.htm
System catalog
refers to the Technical and business systems. It describes the implementation of the customer landscape.

Hi,
Software Catalog
The SAP System Landscape Directory contains component information about all the available software modules, including their combination options and dependencies. This information represents the basis for the description of the system landscape. You can get the current model data from the master component information provided by SAP.
You can also enter information about third-party products in the SLD for managing your system landscape.
The software catalog displays this information and enables you to maintain data for third-party products. This section contains information about the following:
· Modeling logic of software components and software products
· Displaying the software catalog
· Maintaining data for third-party products

Hi,
Systems Catalog".
This basically describes the systems in two views Technical system (Physically) and Business System (Logically).
So, logically I can say that a One Technical System can be reffered with multiple Business system names. Okay, let me also put in this way for SAP guys. If R/3 is installed on one machine and this R/3 has multiple clients on the same system. Then the system is called as Technical system and multiple Clients are called as Business Systems.
Example: When we define the 3rd Party system we assign HostName to Technical system and some Logical Name (LEG001) to the Business System. If we are creating SAP system then the HostName is Technical System and Clients are addressed as Business systems. Here it shows Visually!
"Software Catalog".
This is straight forward as I said above that this will hold information about the software that Customer or Vendors are having. Say if they are having Microsoft Office software and some of the components installed (Access, Word, PowerPoint) on the Technical System. So, Microsoft office is called as Product and Access, Word and PowerPoint are called as Software Components.

HI
System Landscape Directory: a central repository of information about software and systems in the data center.
In SLD we save products, software components and business systems for logical level, and technical systems for technical level. We can use SLD to determine which technical systems are installed on our landscape, which of these are assigned to a business system and which products and software components are installed in this system.
The Software catalog describes the installed products and their constituent components. The software catalog is delivered with contents about all SAP products. Customers and Partners can extend this catalog with information about software from other vendors.
The System Catalog describes the systems in the data center from two perspectives: a logical view (business systems) and a physical view (technical systems). In other words, the Systems catalog describes the concrete implementation of the customer landscape.
Information from the software catalog is used in the Integration Repository to organize development efforts. Information from the systems catalog is used in the Integration Directory to drive the specific configuration of Integration scenarios.
SAP XI utilizes both types of content:
Integration Repository: Component Information
Integration Directory: Landscape Description
The landscape description contains information about all installed products/components at customeru2019s site.
