Problems with SAP Print

Hello all.

We are having some problems with some of our EAN production printers.

In 2 of 10 output requests we receive the following error:

Windows/NT error 1801 [
windowshost\printername]: "The printer name is invalid."

The printers are all defined like this:

DeviceAttributes:

Spool server: SAP Application server

Spool host: SAP Application server

Access Method:

Host spool access method: C: Direct operating system call

Host printer:
windows print server\printer

Host name: SAP Application server.

We have several Windows servers out there which are used as print servers, but they also have the following functions: File server, Domino server(some), SQL Servers for proprietary applications etc.

I think the problem is that when the SAP output request is sent to the Windows print server, the server is to busy to respond within a reasonable amount of time and therefore the output request goes into an error state.

As i see it there are a few things we can do:

1. Define the printer on the SAP Application server in the Windows print manager instead of a remote windows print server. Since we don't have any obvious network problems i think this would eliminate a possible bottleneck at the remote print server.

2. Change the access method ? Maybe use access method U (Berkeley), anyone have experience with this ?

3. I came across a parameter for the SAP Application server (rspo/lpq/retries) which wasn't defined yet/had no value. Anyone know how this parameter works ? Are there any other parameters that would help in our case, such as trying to access the printer several times when it fails with "printer name unknown" ?

Any help/pointers/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Gerhard.
