File copy and New hardware

Hi, we are planning on moving our SAP applications (R/3, BW and SRM) which are all running on the same LPAR to a new hardware. We are planning on doing a copy of the entire filesystem (root access) and restore it on the new hardware (after the partition and AIX install is complete). Has anyone done this kind of migration before and experienced problems with this approach. Is there any document out there that details this procedure. Please let me know. Thanks

Hi Gabrie,

Is this the only option you have? Are you servers in two different locations - you can not swing your disk to the new server or replicate at disk sub-system level?

Technically, this is no different from disk mirroring at SAN level. Key thing is to make sure permissions & timestamp are preserved. You need to keep your services, passwd, fstab, printer definition files updated on the new server. Are you changing the SID also?

Dear RK, we are not changing the <SID> and they will remain the same. The IP address and the domain is changing (not hostname, ie ABC.xxx.com to ABC.yyy.com). There are some oss notes that talk about the IP change. But other than that do you see any issues. Thanks

Hi,

If the OS is same with the same version than you will need to perform certain post actions, if you are changing the hostname create alis of the old hostname name and IP address to avoid interface issues and startup problem.

You will also need to apply for a new license key since the hardware is changed.

Check for the users, service files entries and keep it same. You will also need to configure your memory related area if you have bought extra resources on new hardware.

If the OS is different with different release, than you will need to refer to the OS migration document.

Hi Gabriel,

There are procedure available from SAP for Homogeneous/Heterogeneous System Copy, OS/DB Migration.

Your scenario if of hardware move, you will have to consult to your hardware vendor.

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/13/e9a94edc4340a99cfa0a0318ea51a3/content.htm

Please be aware it is not only about copying SAP and DB directories but the entire OS file system.

And if you are changing from 32-bit to 64-bit version the above option will not work, you will have to perform and follow OS/DB migration procedure. refer: service.sap.com/osdbmigration

All the Best,

Hi Gabriel,

Check these notes for Hardware keys:

Note 1035597 - Digitally signed license keys after hardware change

Note 174911 - Determining the hardware key (HW key)

Please keep in mind if you have SSO configured, you will have redo the actions again on new hardware.

Hi.

Read this.

Note 547314 - FAQ: System Copy procedure

Dear Sergo, thanks for sending me the link but that link is for System Copy. That process involves doing a base install of the application and then export from Source and Import in Target. I was looking for details on complete filesystem to filesystem copy without doing any install. Thanks
