File upload and storage

Hi experts!!

I am new to Portal developement and i need some advice.

There is a need in a project i am working on where the portal user should be able to upload files. I know that in web dynpro java we can use UI elements "file upload". What i don't understand is where will these files be stored. The portal i am working on is an external facing portal. Should we use a server for the file storage????

Any advice will be helpful.
