Management of configurable materials

Hi SAP experts!

We have this scenario and I hope any of you could help us with this issue.

The raw material of the enterprise is primarily rolls of paper, each roll is received as a new "Roll Number" which is unique and unrepeatable. However, each Roll can have other characteristics such as "Diameter", "Weight", "Lenght", etc. besides the characteristic "Roll Number".

The Material Code of the roll may vary depending on the type of paper, hence there are only a few Material codes but infinite possibilities of values on each of its characteristics... The main purpose is to receive and storage every roll as its "Roll Number" so we can find it in its specific Storage Location, or consume it.

We were trying to solve this issue by using Variant Configuration, but we noticed that the most of the SAP manuals, guides and examples are SD oriented, moreover those examples manage fixed values such as "Colour", "Brand", etc. And in this case the possible values of the characteristics are not fixed (diameter, weight, etc.). Is there a way of using Variant Configuration in the purchasing area? If so, would VC apply to this scenario? If you think of another way of managing this your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, everyone.
