SAP HANA SPS 12 Upgrade from SPS 11 - Queries

Hi Experts,

We are using HANA DB 1.0, SPS 11 Revision 02, exactly from system i.e. (, and this is on SAP Cloud Platform. We are planning to upgrade HANA DB to HANA 1.0 SPS 12 and >= revision 05. We have multiple environments for DEV, Test, Staging and Prod.

We have few questions:

oAre there any best practices on upgrade from SP11 to 12

oAre there any incompatible changes which might come-up which might require code adjustments

oWe plan to take a DB backup before we start with the upgrade. Our primary reason for back up is to restore in case we get into issues during upgrade. During creation of a Service Request for Restore in Cloud Cockpit, we see 2 options: DataBase or DatabaseSystem. Could we get into issues with Database System during upgrade. If yes, is there a possibility of taking Database System backup

oWe have following environments: DEV, Test, Staging and Prod . We will upgrade our DEV system first. Upgrade for other systems might happen later. Could there be issues in transporting objects from DB on SP12 to a DB on SP11

Please share give your experiences / ideas / any best practice documents.

    firstly you should start with reading the related SAP Notes. You can start with those two:

    2298750 - SAP HANA Platform SPS 12 Release Note
    1948334 - SAP HANA Database Update Paths for SAP HANA Maintenance Revisions

    Before the upgrade you should do a full system backup, including the SystemDB and all tenant databases.

    As you will have different database releases in your landscape, you might encounter some problems during transporting of objects. You need to take it into account when planning a project.

      Hi Bartosz,

      Thanks for your reply, I have gone through these notes already and there many notes inside again, we are sure which is our suitable target Maintenance Revision in SPS12.

      but few specific questions still need clarity:-

      1) what if upgrade fails and database corrupt? why I am asking because this system is running on cloud and as I know we can take the full backup but cannot do "recovery system", so, question is - when we raise request for recovery (this is explained in then where it goes and who take up this recovery activity and how long they take to do, since we don't get downtime more then 30 Min.

      2) any specific configuration we must perform in HANA after upgrade to SPS12?

      Appreciate your inputs on this.
